The Icing On Your Wedding Cake

The wedding cake is an important feature of your wedding. In fact, it usually gets a great deal of attention and serves as the centerpiece of the wedding ceremony. In addition, it is a favorite backdrop of wedding pictures. Therefore, you certainly want to make certain the cake is beautiful and perfect for your special day. This means paying attention to every detail, ranging from the size to the design and even to the icing used on the cake.

Choosing the Right Wedding Cake Icing

The icing on the wedding cake gets as much attention as its size and its design. In addition, there are many different icing flavors for you to choose from. Some of the most popular options include:

  • Butter cream icing
  • Fondant icing
  • Royal icing
  • Ganache icing

Each type of icing has its pros and cons that should be considered when planning the perfect wedding cake.

Butter Cream Icing

Butter cream icing is a traditional, rich and creamy type of icing. It is easily colored or flavored and is used for fancy decorations like shells, swags, basket weaves, icing flowers, and more. Considering that it is usually made entirely of butter, it has a tendency to melt in extreme heat. Given this constraint, it is not recommended for outdoor weddings.

Fondant Icing

Fondant icing looks smooth and stiff and is made with gelatin and corn syrup, which provides it with a helmet-like appearance. This icing is at its ideal when decorated with marzipan fruits, gum paste flowers, or a simple ribbon. The good thing about fondant is it does not need refrigeration.

Royal Icing

Royal icing is made from a mixtire of confectioner's sugar and milk or egg whites. Royal icing is what the surfaces of gingerbread men are peppered with. It is white, shiny, and hard. Just like fondant icing, it does not need to be refrigerated. It is used for decorations like dots and latticework.

Ganache Icing

Ganache icing is made from a chocolate and heavy cream combination, which can be poured over cakes for a glass-like chocolate finish or whipped into a filling that stands up beautifully between cake layers. Because of the many ingredients, however, it is unstable. This means it cannot withstand heat or humid weather, or the icing will slide right off the cake.

Indeed, there a lot of cake icing options there. Just make sure you have in mind what you want before you go to a baker. The cake icing usually reflects the personality of the couple. Needless to say, the more froo froo you get on your wedding dessert, obviously, the more it will cost. So, sometimes the simpler way is better. In case of doubt, you can always ask for a free taste of the icing and the cake itself.

The wedding cake is an important feature of your wedding; as the cake will appear in the "cutting of the cake" photograph, a staple of the wedding album. The flowers and bridesmaids outfits will influence the style and color of the cake. You do not have to settle for fruitcake though as there are endless fillings to choose from. The cake can also double as desert if you are on a tight cost budget.

Wedding Cake Styles

Have a clear idea of what style of cake you want by before you go to the baker. The more frills you get on your wedding cake, the more it will cost, so sometimes simpler is better. And, don't forget to ask for a taste test!
